We’re a fat world culture. iPhone application developers want to help. Though there are some apps that fill your desire to hear a fart sound, others are geared for your health. Imagine that. Random Ideas’ “Edibles” application wants to help me, Brendon David, get trimmer? Great news.

Studies show a lot of things, but one approach to controlling how we consume that has a tried and true reputation is simply journaling what you eat. It sounds frivolous, but it is tremendously helpful in losing lbs; especially when you consider that dropping weight is usually more of a mental challenge.

Edibles, like it’s competition Lose It!, is filled with all of the functionality one would want: save foods you eat often in a list, track calories, note carbohydrate consumption and more. One of the cool features we like is the extra credit points it gives you when you exercise. That’s great as long as those extra credit points are geared for giving you a pass to eat a $87 cupcake from Sprinkles in Beverly Hills.

At the end of the day, Edibles is like the voice of reason constantly nagging you to make the right decision when you eat. I like that. It’s easier to hear it from a computer (a la HAL) than from a person that you can reason with.

We give it 4 out of 5 stars! (a la Star Search)

For folks feeling guilty about how they have let themselves go, Lose it! is the newest iPhone app that keeps us honest on what and how much we consume. This application is simply a way to count calories. The good news is that it is amazingly easy-to-use.

When the application is first launched on your phone, it asks you some basic info like your weight, goal weight loss and gender. Once you enter that information, you can get started by entering the food you are consuming. We were so happy to see that Lose It! did such a great job in pre-populating the app with thousands of common foods, drinks and brands. That means you don’t have to guess the calories. They already have them in the app!

Another cool feature is that based on your information and goals, it tells you how many weeks it will take to achieve your target weight on a handy line graph. We’ve been testing this sucker for a week and have had no problems. We’ve even enlisted our friends to try it also. This product is now officially placed it in the “Yeah, you should probably download this app” category.
