Hi Robert,

Thanks for your note. Glad to hear that you're using Memrise.com also. I have experienced your same findings. Some of the word sets are simply sloppy or not relevant. That's why I put in so much time in creating a Japanese word list that worked for my daily business needs. If you'd like to check it out search for this "Japanese: Business Terms: SEM, Tech, Operations". That will show you what I've got so far. What are you studying? Are you prepping towards a particular goal?

Have a good one,
Brendon

I too am using memrise to study Japanese, and I also have found that some of the sets already made by other people are a little messy or a little too easy for my level, is there any chance of getting access to the word lists you have created?

Hey T_Man,

Thanks for the note. Appreciate the good / honest feedback.

Stoked that you and your buddies ride the way that you do. I think that many roadies / CX folks ride a fixed at one time or another. So, you're not alone there. Stoked that you're wearing helmets. Good on ya.

Rice safely.

Cheers,
brendon

I think that your description of fixed gear riders is a little bit too general and stereotypical. Myself and many of my friends commute daily on fixed gear bikes. None of us own messenger bags, beanies or slip on shoes. We also wear helmets and most of us run front brakes.

Why do I ride a fixie you may ask. Simply because it's a nice change from my road bike. It shakes things up a bit with a different feel. Yes I own a road bike too.

I do have to say that riding around town on a townie is much more relaxing than riding a fixed gear bike around town. Plus strapping groceries to a townie is much easier.

Hey Deric,
Thanks for the note. Had a great time at the 2011 Los Angeles JET Pre-Departure Conference.

Tabelog and Hot Pepper are the dominant review sites in Japanese. Sunny Pages is the go-to for English language.

To keep super up to date on gigs and touring bands, consult the Metropolis website. That's the hook-up.

You'll definitely want to make time to go to Blue Note in Tokyo, the Baked Potato, Motion Blue in Yokohama, etc. From what I understand, there are some other new venues that are not as expensive that have good players, but there names escape me.

You can always catch live bands at The Barge Inn in Narita, but those are more like local westerners doing rock music. Odd scene.

Chiba City may have some venues, but they will most likely be rock-centric.

Let me know if you have any other questions! Find me on Linkedin.

Hi Brendon!

I received your card yesterday at the JET Pre-D Orientation, and can't for the life of me find your email address. Are there any good concert venues in Chiba? I am not limited to Jazz, and would love to find ANY live music near Asahi. You know, somewhere to go after a long day at work.

Also, what would you say is the Japanese equivalent of Yelp? You mentioned Tabelog in this post. :)

I personally prefer a freewheel Sometimes when I talk to people they act like I've committed blasphemy when I say that.
I guess there is supposed to be some kind of spiritual experience when riding a fixed gear bike but I never felt it. I like to coast.
I do like the simplicity of a single speed.

I enjoyed reading this update. Thanks!
I am writing from China, the "land of the bicycle," yet there is not one sigle bike lane in all the country. I know this because I have traveled everywhere here. Me thinks the cause of this might have something to do with trying to force people to buy cars and consume petrol. Similar thing is happening in Japan, where they are slowly squeezing out the bike lanes on already-too-narrow streets in an effort to increase gasoline consumption. It's a sad state of affairs for cyclists in Asia.
