I personally prefer a freewheel Sometimes when I talk to people they act like I've committed blasphemy when I say that.
I guess there is supposed to be some kind of spiritual experience when riding a fixed gear bike but I never felt it. I like to coast.
I do like the simplicity of a single speed.

I enjoyed reading this update. Thanks!
I am writing from China, the "land of the bicycle," yet there is not one sigle bike lane in all the country. I know this because I have traveled everywhere here. Me thinks the cause of this might have something to do with trying to force people to buy cars and consume petrol. Similar thing is happening in Japan, where they are slowly squeezing out the bike lanes on already-too-narrow streets in an effort to increase gasoline consumption. It's a sad state of affairs for cyclists in Asia.

@Jeff Thanks for the comments. I'm glad to hear that you are hitting the streets and spending your cash where you feel welcome as a cyclist, resident and human. I too agree that Charlie Gandy is doing some good work here in Long Beach.

@Brendon. You hit the nail on the head, especially the "aha" moment that cyclists experience. I know that when I am biking through the city of Long Beach I am noticing countless locally run establishments that I either stop at or plan on returning to. AND I DO! Long Beach has the incredible situation of not only talking the talk of being a bike city, but actually walking the walk (or in our case, biking the bike). Charlie Gandy is doing an absolutely phenomenal job coordinating and implementing bike awareness in the city. My hat is off to him, and I wish him the best of luck continuing to rock the house! Ride people. Ride everyday; to and from the market, the bar, the laundry-mat, and your buddies house!

The only reason men do this is because Japanese women are too timid to say anything in public. I don't mean it's their own fault, but certainly in this modern age Japanese women should learn to start being more defensive about their rights. Until then, the hands will keep on groping!

@Gary Thanks for the comments, Gary. I wish more people knew more about her and other photographers. It is definitely the art form that is faceless and nameless in modern times....unless your name is Ansel Adams or The Cobra Snake

@jeff Thanks for the comment. I've definitely been seeing more townies around town too. I do have to say that riding around town on a townie is much more relaxing than riding a fixed gear bike around town. Plus strapping groceries to a townie is much easier.

Lately, I am find around the Long Beach bike scene that the competition, or battle, between roadies and fixies is becoming less of an issue. I know prevalent, fixed-gear heads are deciding to cruise with vintage townies as a way to get to A to B. It seems the language of seeming guerrilla style biking has taken a back seat. Don't get me wrong fools, fixies are still out there mashing. More motha f"cking power to them. But my ass is getting old, and my knees are like the author of this blogs....shot.

Shit aside, I love the aesthetics of the fixed gear over the roadie. The lines, composition, color, and overall practicality creates beautiful objects.
